Sails of the Spirit – 2016
A unique inclusive expedition in Latvia
July – August 2016

Organizers of the Sails of the Spirit events in Latvia are
– WHITE CANE NGO (Yekaterinburg, Russia)
– Yacht Club AUDA (Riga, Latvia)
– Liepaja Society of the Blind (Liepājas Neredzīgo biedrība)

Dear friends,
The 13th stage of the Sails of the Spirit project is taking place on 1 July – 23 August 2016 in Russia, Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. LOVER, a sailing catamaran, starts from Saint Petersburg and is going to be in the French town of Ouistreham by the end of August. The distance is approximately 3000 sea miles. The crew will be inclusive, i.e. it will consist of people with and without disabilities (we prefer to say “people of ALL abilities”) from different regions of Russia and other countries of the world.
Sails of the Spirit is an international sailing initiative founded by people with visual disabilities from Russia. Its purpose is to develop international inclusive cooperation and to create opportunities for people of all abilities to take part in yachting activities. The project started in 2011 and since then its inclusive teams have made 12 preparatory stages and visited the Andaman, North, Caribbean, Baltic, Mediterranean, Black Seas plus Lake Baikal and Sevan.
The catamaran LOVER is going to visit Liepaja on 26 July with a colorful presentation of the Sails of the Spirit expedition at the catamaran in Liepaja Port. During the event guests will also learn about the First World Congress for People with Special Needs that is taking place in Yekaterinburg, Russia in 2017. Members of the team will be eager to show everyone around the catamaran but with a blindfold on! This will be one of inclusive activities at the presentation. There also will be an art competition. You can find details below.
The expedition team includes Latvian yachtsmen from the Riga yacht-club “Auda” as well as Yevgenia Malyshko, a historian from Moscow, who, being blind, works as a tour guide, and many other participants of different inclusive projects. The idea of the Sails of the Spirit belongs to Oleg Kolpashchikov from Russia, who is in charge of the humanitarian program of the expedition and will lead the presentations in Latvia.
Everyone is welcome to join the event, get to know members of the unique inclusive sailing team, visit a real ocean catamaran (may be for the very first time!) and take part in various activities. Don’t forget that staying in Liepaja is also significant since it it’s the middle point on the route of the expedition!
