White cane day in Liepaja 2015
Already seventeenth autumn with you…
 
October 15 is the International White canes day. Is the day what is celebrated all over the world. Also to us in Liepaja was held event in honor of this day. Liepaja Society of the Blind members, volunteers, supporters and well-wishers, more than 290 people, gathered in Liepaja Olympic Centre Tango Hall to celebrate this day.
White canes day began with street activities for drivers, which took place at Bāriņu Street and Kungu Street crossroad, in places where there are no pedestrian crossings. There were tested drives attention and reminded them that among us are people with visual disabilities.
Event in Liepaja Olympic Centre started with Aigars Bušs poetry recitation “Zeme dzīva zels” (author Daina Avotiņa). Also in this year celebration day didn’t remained without the association manager Māra Ceiruļa celebration speech and with Pastor Voldemārs Zveja speech and good wishes. Our ears were delighted by Solveiga Vildmane performed musical composition “Mazā prelūdija” and also Zoja Smirnova performed musical composition “Upe plūst tevī” (“River flows in you”). Listening to performed musical compositions soul raise above and ceased not to rejoice for the God-given talent. With their performances we were entertained by the ensemble “Sentiments” singers and Liepaja Christian mission girls. Māris accounted about Society work throughout the year.
Also this year as every celebration year Societies guests and members shared their good words and good wishes. Everyone was delighted to hear how much has been done, that the Society every year becomes bigger and Liepaja becomes more available to everyone. In this year celebration Liepaja Society of the Blind said the greatest thanks to their volunteers, who year after year continue to help and support people in Kuldiga, Aizpute, Liepaja and who participating in social rehabilitation and cognitive center “Garden of Soul Relieve” work and promote its development. 
Great thanks, Liepaja City Council representatives Uldis Sesks, Vilnis Vitkovskis, Jurijs Hadarovičs, Gunārs Ansiņš  and Brigita Dreiže, as well as Social Services director Iveta Bartkeviča, also representatives from Kuldigas district Social Service, Aizpute municipality and Social Service, Latvian bones, joints and connective tissue of patients Liepaja Society Division, Youth care and rehabilitation center for persons with mental disorders, Liepaja Deaconate Center, Ltd. “Hercogs L” representatives, VSAC "Kurzeme" branch "Iļģi" Director and all members of society, who came to celebrate this day together with us. 
Information events within the celebration day was held in this years 16 and 17 October, where in the shopping center “XL Sala” and in Liepaja Pētertirgus citizens of Liepaja and its guests was able to acquainted with the activities of the Society. We were presenting to people the technical aids which are necessary to people with visual impairment, gave the opportunity to try to move blindfolded with white cane, told about people with visual impairment. Could look and buy handicrafts created by people with disabilities in Liepaja Society of the Blind.
